Luka Modric has paid out a 1 million EUR settlement following an investigation into his tax affairs and accusations of defrauding Spanish authorities. The Croatian midfielder, currently playing for Real Madrid, has been accused of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities, alongside his wife who was also accused of breaking tax laws.
Despite appearing in court with his lawyer and denying any wrongdoing, they made the decision to repay 1 million EUR following the accusation that 870,728 EUR was kept from the tax authorities in 2013 and 2014. Further details of the court case have not yet been released and tax officials in Spain have not confirmed receipt of the cash settlement.
Modric is another high-profile footballer in a long line of those to have recently been investigated for supposedly contravening tax laws. This list contains well-known names including Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, Javier Mascherano and Neymar.
