Tax evasion is often portrayed as a victimless crime but, according to a report in the Independent, this is far from the case. As many as 5.6 million children lives could be lost as a result of tax evasion on a global scale.
Barely a day goes by without a report of tax evasion proceedings being filed against sports stars or Hollywood A-listers but the human cost of tax evasion is rarely bought to light. According to the report in the Independent, however, the high levels of tax evasion amongst the super-rich and the world’s largest companies could, ultimately, lead to the deaths of millions of children in some of the world’s poorest countries. This is a shocking statistic and one that is sure to bring the issue of tax evasion to the forefront of decision maker’s consciousness.
Tax Evasion – A Growing Concern
According to the report in the Independent, tax evasion has the potential to take a terrible toll on the lives of millions of children and a spokesman for Christian Aid states to the Independent, “Tax evasion is so widespread and damaging that it is tantamount to a new slavery.” Essentially, the problem lies in the fact that the governments of some of the world’s poorest countries are being cheated out of around $160 billion each year as a result of tax evasion; which alone is more than the $40-60 billion that the United Nation’s believes would be required to pay for their Millennium Development Goals; the most notable of which would be to halve poverty by 2015 which would save the lives of 350,000 children each year. Unfortunately, however, the widespread nature of high-powered tax evasion is making it considerably more problematic.
Tax Evasion – The Need for Action
Tax evasion on the scale being spoke about here is certainly something that needs to be addressed and the point is given gravitas by the head of Christian Aid, Dr Daleep Mukarji, who states to the Independent, “We predict that illegal trade-related tax evasion alone will be responsible for the deaths of 5.6 million children under the age of five between 2000 and 2015. That’s almost 1,000 a day”. Christian Aid believes that up to $11 trillion of funds may be stashed away in tax havens.”
