Tax Evasion - Survival of the Fittest According to a report on CNN, the winner of the American version of Survivor in its debut season in the USA, Richard Hatch, recently filed an appeal against his tax evasion conviction which was levied against him after he failed to pay any taxes on the $1 million of prize money that he received for winning the show. Tax evasion is dealt with very severely in the United States and Mr Hatch was sentenced to 4 years in prison; a sentence he is now in the process of appealing. Tax Evasion - Going to Appeal According to the report on CNN, Richard Hatch, the Survivor winner, plans to appeal to the U.S Supreme Court against the 4 year jail sentence he received for tax evasion pertaining to his $1 million winnings. The lawyers working on behalf of Mr Hatch claim that he has been the victim of duplicity on the part of the television show's producers, CBS. According to the report on CNN, Mr Hatch's lawyers claims he shouldn't be held accountable for the tax evasion as he claims that the show's producers agreed to pay the taxes on his winnings if he agreed to keep quiet about cheating he witnessed on the show; a claim that CBS vehemently deny. Tax Evasion - Hatch Optimistic Given the fact that the book was recently thrown at a number of high profile tax evasion cases, such as Wesley Snipes, who was given a 3 year sentence for his own tax evasion, the optimism that Mr Hatch holds that his appeal is upheld could be misguided. Speaking to CNN, however, Mr Hatch's lawyer, Michael Minns, states, "He's extremely optimistic about his appeal. He still believes the system should work." Mr Hatch's experiences surrounding his tax evasion scandal have also compelled him to write a book and his lawyer goes on to say how he plans to write about "his experiences with the legal system and his disappointment not just with the problems that he suffered but with the problems other people have suffered that he has met."
