Tax Evasion – Offshore Havens Sign Tax Evasion Agreements

There are a number of offshore locations that have long held links with the UK so far as tax evasion is concerned. Locations such as Jersey and the Isle of Man have begun signing deals to help expose those who are involved in tax evasion.

According to a report in Accountancy Magazine, those engaged in tax evasion in some of the most common locations for offshore accounts such as Jersey can expect to soon be caught out after authorities in the UK signed agreements with the most commonly utilised outposts for offshore accounts used in tax evasion to help expose those who are dodging their responsibilities to pay tax in the United Kingdom. Places such as Jersey and the Isle of Man have long been quite an attractive proposition to those looking to conceal their money and engage in tax evasion but it is now clear that steps are being taken to move away from this and help Jersey and other offshore locations being thought of as synonymous with tax evasion. According to the report in Accountancy Magazine, several places that are commonly believed to help harbour tax evasion activity have signed agreements with the authorities in the UK to bring such activity to an abrupt halt.

Tax Evasion – On the Straight and Narrow

It has proven to be too much for many of the locations most commonly associated with tax evasion such as Jersey and the Isle of Man to bear to be continually placed under the spotlight whenever tax evasion investigations are begun. As such, according to the report in Accountancy Magazine, many have now signed a voluntary agreement with UK authorities to make suspected tax evasion in their accounts much more transparent. In the last couple of weeks, Jersey became the latest known tax haven to sign a tax information exchange agreement with the UK, in the hope of bringing any who are engaged in tax evasion to justice. This follows fast on the heels of the UK signing a similar deal with the Isle of Man to help address and expose the tax evasion which has been fairly prevalent on the tiny isle.

Tax Evasion – Providing Transparency

The main problem that had arisen with tax evasion in offshore accounts in places such as Jersey was that it was very difficult for authorities in the UK to investigate because of the lack of transparency in the banking authorities in these locations. However, these recently signed agreements are hoped to be the first stage in eradicating the tax evasion problem in these offshore tax havens.
