Tax Evasion – Self Assessed Have Higher Levels of Tax Evasion

Tax Evasion – Self Assessed Have Higher Levels of Tax Evasion

Tax evasion is something that more and more people are reading about when they pick up their papers each morning given the number of high profile tax evasion cases. Tax evasion on a more fundamental level appears to be higher amongst those who are self assessed.

According to a report in the Irish Examiner, the self assessment variety of taxation in Ireland is failing to functionally effectively amidst findings that an audit of 47 barristers revealed just under one million euros of tax was unaccounted for and tax evasion was extremely high amongst those who filled in self assessment tax forms. This is obviously indicative of a wider tax evasion problem when it comes to self assessment forms and it would appear that there is still work which needs to be done in order to ensure that self assessment tax forms yield results which are representative of the real tax situation. Tax evasion may be on the increase at present given the financial implications of the credit crunch making it more of a consideration for many savers but it is important to remember the severity of the offence and whether tax evasion is undertaken willingly or inadvertently, the punishments are often the same.

Tax Evasion – Providing a Deterrent

It is generally thought that a lack of suitable deterrents is one of the main reasons that tax evasion may be on the increase in Ireland. According to the report in the Irish Examiner, only one person has been jailed for tax evasion in the country since 2003. Without adequate consequences for the crime of tax evasion, many are likely to see it as a risk worth taking but this is certainly not the attitude to adopt because authorities are increasingly clamping down on tax evasion on a global scale because they deem it impossible to continue turning a blind eye to tax havens and widespread levels of tax evasion which has a worldwide impact on poverty levels.

Tax Evasion – Seeking Expert Help

According It is important to realise that much of the tax evasion which is discovered from self assessment forms will have been as a result of genuine error. For those who are concerned that they may have engaged in tax evasion or tax avoidance unwittingly, it it crucial to speak to tax evasion specialists as soon as possible because they will be knowledgeable in all areas of tax evasion law and will be in a position to offer pertinent advice for your own particular situation.
