HMRC steps up its Tax Investigation Efforts

Despite the reported poor service to the general tax paying public HMRC are sticking to their plans to pursue people for tax evasion and tax avoidance.

HMRC have announced a number of further tax amnesties for certain categories of taxpayer where they can disclose and tax fraud or tax evasion.

In addition it is reported that HMRC has announced plans to launch 30 teams tax evasion detectors to target certain trades and professions in various areas of the UK.

This follows up targeting businesses suspected of tax evasion in the restaurant trade in London, Scotland and the North West and landlords in the South West who have not declared their rental income to HMRC and thus evaded tax.

It is reported that the next in the list will be:

• Market Traders
• Motor Dealers
• Clothing Manufacturers and Distributors

These teams are multidisciplinary in that they consist of a number of specialists (all of who have experience of routing out tax evasion and tax fraud) with experience of all taxes a business should pay (VAT, PAYE etc). These teams focus only on the businesses where they suspect tax evasion and they put significant research into their suspicions of tax evasion before they strike.

HMRC believe that these teams are a very useful tool in finding evidence of tax evasion and it has been reported that they have already raised significant extra funds from tax evasion and that their visits have in some cases resulted in cases where the business owners are being prosecuted for their tax evasion.
