Tax Evasion - A Shocking Tax Evasion Discovery

Tax Evasion - A Shocking Tax Evasion Discovery

Despite tax evasion being a serious crime, many now believe that tax evasion in some circumstances may be 'justifiable'. According to a recent report, many industries believe that certain industries shouldn't face tax evasion charges.

According to a report in the Vancouver Sun, there is much sympathy amongst certain business sectors when it comes to tax evasion to the extent that many now believe that tax evasion may be justifiable in some cases. This is obviously not a view that will be shared by governments worldwide but it is interesting to see the public's perception to tax evasion and the way in which it is structured. The research conducted by Sage discovered that many believe that small amounts of tax evasion carried out by otherwise honest businesses should be seen as acceptable and not punishable by the authorities. These findings were based on interviews carried out by people who work in the restaurant and construction industries and their beliefs that low level tax evasion by companies who are otherwise above board should be legislated for will most likely cause consternation amongst the authorities who are doing all they can to make tax evasion a thing of the past.

Tax Evasion - Dependent on Circumstance?

According to the report in the Vancouver Sun, the general consensus amongst those interviewed about tax evasion was that there were no real black and white cases of tax evasion and that all factors need to be taken into account when someone conceals their income in order to avoid paying taxes. Obviously, tax evasion is a crime that is very much in the public eye at present and there have been dozens of high profile tax evasion cases of late where, in the majority of cases, the authorities have sought to make an example of those who have been convicted of tax evasion. As such, the revelation that many business owners believe that a certain amount of tax evasion is justifiable is certainly an interesting development. However, it is important to point out that those interviewed were quick to point out their beliefs that those who commit large level tax evasion deserve to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Tax Evasion - Striking a Balance

Whilst there is no case to encourage tax evasion, the fact that many business leaders have sympathy for hitherto honest business workers who conduct low levels of tax evasion is certainly an interesting development and one that should certainly be born in mind when it comes to dissecting the issue of tax evasion.
